WEDNESDAY 25TH MAY, 2022

BE HUMBLE LIKE JESUS
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me”. John 13:16-20.

A close consideration of our subject shows clearly that a Christian can only carry out the service of washing his fellow believers feet in so far as he himself is like his Lord. How can we resemble Him? If we consider him on his pathway of humility and self-denial, and if we are girded with the linen towel, i.e. if we pay attention to our own pathway, we shall not speak with our brother from a position of superiority. Beholding the Lord leads the disciple to adopt a position of grace and mercy towards those whose feet have caused them to slip.

The Lord said to His disciples, “if ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them”. This is a word for all believers. The faithful disciple and follower of his Lord will not be satisfied with just knowing these important things; he will act accordingly. A servant who is sent is subject to the one who sends him. How condescending of the Lord! He identifies Himself with those whom he sends, bringing them into a relationship with the One who sent Him.

 PRAYER
O Lord, give me a new heart and put a new spirit in me in Jesus name.
