JESUS IS THE ANSWER - THE WORD OF LIFE

Image
THE WORD OF LIFE TUESDAY 31ST MAY, 2022 JESUS IS THE ANSWER “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house”. Act 16:31. The Apostle Paul and Silas, his companion were able to give a clear testimony for their Lord while in prison in Philippi. In the middle of the night, in all their suffering, they prayed and sang hymns of praise to God. That sort of things strikes people; they see the sincerity behind it. The Bible tells us that the prisoners listened. The prison governor probably did too. Then came the earthquake. God intervened, and that man’s hard heart was broken. “What must I do to be saved?” he asked in his dire need. We have read the answer he received: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”. Can salvation really be obtained so easily? That man was about to commit suicide. When it is a question of life and death, things are simplified; there is no time for complications. Someone standing in God’s light, recognizing his guilt, is l

IGNORANCE IS THE GREATEST ENEMY OF MAN - THE WORD OF LIFE

Image
THE WORD OF LIFE MONDAY 30TH MAY, 2022 IGNORANCE IS THE GREATEST ENEMY OF MAN Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? Isa. 55:2 Writers who are unbelievers or even God’s enemies quote the Word of God not infrequently. Their reasons for doing so are varied; some do not give the matter any thought proving that they, too are “at home” in the Bible. Some simply wish to mock at Holy Scripture. The Bible is the inspired Word of God and should not be used for no purpose at all or cited frivolously. Over the entrance to an arts centre stood the verse, “Man shall not live by bread alone”. In large letters, so that it was visible at a great distance. For all its truth, the verse should rather have been quoted in full: “Man doth not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live” (Deut. 8:3). The Lord Jesus quoted this scripture in Matt. 4:4. Bread is necessary food for the body, but

THE MAIN CAUSE OF DEATH - THE WORD OF LIFE

Image
THE WORD OF LIFE SUNDAY 29TH MAY, 2022 THE MAIN CAUSE OF DEATH “The living know that they shall die”. (Eccl. 9:5). By this we do not mean heart or circulatory troubles nor respiratory difficulties, not even cancer or strokes, neither road accidents nor suicide. All these causes must be regarded as merely secondary compared with the main reason for death. The primary cause of death is very short word, but one that people avoid: sin. The Bible says: “Death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Rom. 5:12). Do not gloss over the word “all”! no-one has a recipe for avoiding death. By the time we notice what sin is, we already have the sting of death within us. God brings the matter to its crux when He says, “The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). Afterwards judgement follows. Death is thus the result of serious misconduct. Just as in the world around us there is no effect without a cause, neither is there in our moral responsibility before God. Nobody can talk sin out of existe

LYING IS A SNARE - THE WORD OF LIFE

Image
THE WORD OF LIFE SATURDAY 28TH MAY, 2022 LYING IS A SNARE “He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known”. Pro. 10:9. Christians who are true believers should take the truth seriously, avoiding all lies. Yet this fact poses a problem for all of us to a greater or lesser degree, doesn’t it? Lies generally begin with exaggerations, which are then propagated. Let us take care not to get into the habit of exaggerating! Here are four reasons why we should not tolerate lying in our lives. The Word of God makes it quite clear that we should not lie: “Lie not one to another” (Col. 3:9). One of the ten commandment is: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor” (Exo. 20:16). Lying is often a means of concealing feelings of insecurity. In the end, however, it makes things worse, not better. Think of Abraham and Isaac! (Gen. 12:20 and 26). Lying gets us nowhere. People lie to protect themselves or cover up their tracks. But God sees to it t

DON’T BE A CHURCH GOER - THE WORD OF LIFE - BY REV. PROF. TITUS ADE MARTINS - FRIDAY 27TH MAY, 2022

THE WORD OF LIFE - BY REV. PROF. TITUS ADE MARTINS FRIDAY 27TH MAY, 2022 DON’T BE A CHURCH GOER “The LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart”. 1 Sam. 16:7 NATIONALITY A Dane had emigrated to America at the age of about twenty. When he was ninety, he wanted to see his homeland once again. He travelled to Europe and stayed in Denmark for some months before returning to the United States. On his arrival he was subjected to a lot of questioning by immigration official. To his astonishment he learned that, although he had lived in the USA for about seventy years, he was not an American citizen, as he had supposed. He had never bothered about naturalization; so in the eyes of the law he was still a foreigner. How many people profess Christianity and yet are not really Christians! Many of them attend church regularly on Sundays and even play active rule in the life of their parish. Possibly they suppose that their religious c

BE COURAGEOUS - THE WORD OF LIFE - BY REV. PROF. TITUS ADE MARTINS - THURSDAY 26TH MAY, 2022

THE WORD OF LIFE - BY REV. PROF. TITUS ADE MARTINS THURSDAY 26TH MAY, 2022   BE COURAGEOUS   “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God. ….. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” Rom. 8:28-31   During a storm a violent guest of wind blew out the most famous stained glass windows in the cathedral, which shattered on falling. The pieces were carefully gathered up and kept in a box in the cathedral. The window was repaired with transparent glass. One day a talented artist offered to restore the stained glass window. Photographs helped him to put the fragments together, and the work was a success that it called forth the admiration of all in the parish.   The storms of life, an accident, a death unemployment or financial problems thwart and destroyed many of our plans and intentions.    Everything seems to be shattered. But let us not be discouraged!   We need to trust God. If he has permitted a certain disappointme

BE HUMBLE LIKE JESUS - THE WORD OF LIFE - BY REV. PROF. TITUS ADE MARTINS - WEDNESDAY 25TH MAY, 2022

THE WORD OF LIFE - BY REV. PROF. TITUS ADE MARTINS WEDNESDAY 25TH MAY, 2022 BE HUMBLE LIKE JESUS “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me”. John 13:16-20. A close consideration of our subject shows clearly that a Christian can only carry out the service of washing his fellow believers feet in so far as he himself is like his Lord. How can we resemble Him? If we consider him on his pathway of humility and self-denial, and if we are girded with the linen towel, i.e. if we p

STEALING IS A CRIME - THE WORD OF LIFE - BY REV. PROF. TITUS ADE MARTINS - TUESDAY 24TH MAY, 2022

Image
THE WORD OF LIFE - BY REV. PROF. TITUS ADE MARTINS TUESDAY 24TH MAY, 2022 STEALING IS A CRIME “Thou shalt not steal”. (Exo. 20:15). Many of God’s commandments are brief and to the point. This one tells us clearly that we must not take what belongs to another. It is a crime that is punishable by law practically everywhere. Many people might now assert: “But I have never taken anyone’s property”. Now God’s commandments involve more than is to be seen at first sight. Admittedly in this detail of the ten commandments it is primarily a question of tangible things that must not be appropriate by others unlawfully. However, there are indisputably, other expensive and highly paid things, like working hours. Here, too, we must not steal. Or what about things that we find in the street or on the beach? A person’s honour is his inviolable right. And how often have we besmirched it. Maybe without even realizing it! Or what happens in normal business life? It isn’t even regarded as wrong to exploit
